Golden telephone

This handset was on display in a bank setting. It is a sleeker more modern design -- at least for the time. It definitely predates the dial era, so probably the caller had to tap the hook several times to get the operator's attention, then would tell her who to connect. If you look closely at the wires (the back one is pretty frayed) you can see that the technology of the time was to wrap the copper in a woven sheath of insulation.

A fine shot of this ancient telephone. I liked how you pointed out the nature of the insulation on the wire. Those were the days!

Fascinating to link this old candlestick phone to what we have today . . I wonder what another 100 years will bring . . hello, hello ?

@Ronnie 2¢: I will be happy when cellphone calls attain the reliability of good old fashioned landlines. From the 1950s (if not earlier) connections were fast and reliable, and voice quality was stellar. Then came "Can you hear me now?" became both a service mark and a joke.

I love this shot - it speaks to us of a time when life was simpler and people had respect for each other; they had values and morals back then.

(Note: Copper wire encased in cloth insulation was the normal practice at the time - in fact, the practice prevailed late into the 950's, especially with electrical wiring.)

We know this from old movies. Actually not so very old: less than a century. Developments have been so fast!!
