Steptoe Butte is a quartzite island jutting out of the silty loess of the Palouse hills in Whitman County, Washington. The peak is 3612 feet (1100 m) above sea level, about 1000 feet (300 m) above the surrounding countryside. (These facts are from Wikipedia).
