Feed corn

At the fair, they had a pile of corn to be fed into a sheller. I'm not sure why taking the kernels off the cob is called shelling, but it is. Anyway, I found the pile of corn more interesting than the shelling demonstration.

A great close up of this ear that looks very tough. The reason for "shelling" much have some practical idea behind it, but I don't think I've ever heard and explanation.
