smooth water

I got my ND filter on and the camera mounted on the tripod, then crossed under the pier. The waves weren't really very dramatic, but I got some practice with longer exposures.

Welcome to all. I began blogging Retained-Images in 2004 at It is gone now.

4 seconds at f18, what is the number on the ND filter Harry? When I got mine a few years ago I was using the filters too much, now I rarely us them. I need to go back and try again cause I love the effect but not if its over done. This is a fine image

@Jerry: It was a 10 stop - the only one I had with me

For long time exposures I would take here minimum 60 seconds use an f4-ND filter and early morning or late evening hours. This is a beautiful image Harry. I don´t know, If I would done this better.

@Ralf Kesper: Well, I should have dropped this ISO to 50 and tightened the aperture to f22 or even f25 (if there). This should have gotten me north of 30 seconds. Hindsight is 20/20. I wasn't impressed with the waves and was probably not trying hard enough. I shoot more in the mountains, and rapids and waterfalls seldom need more than a second.

A beautiful image, Harry - I think you did very well with your exposure - sometimes longer can be too much...
