Where I was standing there were some brick remnants of a foundation of an old farmhouse. It had been cleared pretty well, but they left the outhouse standing. This is a barely processed photo - just a bit of raw adjustment and a little vignette.

Toute petite près de cet arbre gigantesque ! Elle me rappelle celles que j'ai vues il y a quelques années. Elles servaient à ranger les outils de jardin.
Belle composition !

@yo: I guess you know that an "outhouse" is not used to store tools, but to provide toilet facilities for dwellings without indoor plumbing.

@Maryse: more of a reminder of how things once were. washing your hands there is not an option.

A fine capture of this outhouse that doesn't seem to have a moon on it.

grouser from Ludlow, United Kingdom

No problems with toilet paper in those days :) A lovely spot

25 Mar 2020 12:30pm

@grouser: I don't know about that. I had a cousin whose farm relied on an outhouse. They always had toilet paper. I have head that during the depression and earlier, they kept a Sears Roebuck catalog for re-purposing of the pages, and before that corn husks left over from the harvest, neither of which seem bearable to me.

Steven from Chicagoland, United States

What a stately tree with its enormous spread! That cloudless, deep blue sky is beautiful! It seems the outhouse is well placed to enjoy views while getting down to business. :-)

That tree needs a swing on it and/or children climbing it! Love the sky as well as the tree. The outhouse gives is some perspective as far as size.

Beautiful composition where the tree now takes all the place of what was once a farm.

Nice. I wonder why leave the outhouse.

26 Mar 2020 12:29am

@B. Thomas: Probably the boss was sitting in there when the bulldozer operator finished the house and wanted to trailer up the equipment.

Elaine Hancock from Olney, United States

I guess nobody wanted to deal with it! This is a beautiful composition with the old outhouse and the gorgeous tree.

En France une dépendance est l'annexe d'un bâtiment principal, aussi bien toilettes (autrefois) buanderie, garage, grange, cabane à outils....

26 Mar 2020 2:31pm

@yo: ah the joys of translating. an out building (perhaps outbuilding) can be a barn, shed, storage, etc. The word "outhouse" in English specifically refers to an outside toilet without plumbing.
